Sony has tweaked the auto focus system and the F717 is impressively fast now. Additionally, the camera's multi-burst mode can snap up to 16 frames at 320 x 240 resolution that adds up to a single 1280 x 960 image - perfect for capturing every detail of subjects in motion, like a golf swing or high dive. Steve's Conclusion The Cyber-shot F717 is the year 2002 update of Sony's very popular , the first 5-megapixel consumer digicam on the market. NightShot mode makes it possible to take pictures or MPEG movies of sleeping children and nocturnal wildlife in a way that is impossible with all other digital still cameras. The Setup menu has an option for selecting the desired direction it operates the Zoom control Tele-Wide when the ring is turned. The F-717 has two very unique operational modes; NightFraming and NightShot. USB Connectivity - Sony's DSC-F717 is the first Sony digital still camera to offer high-speed camera-to-compatible-computer transfer via USB 2. There's no doubt that Sony has had a winner with the DSC-F707 and to tweak it with the improved F717 proves it will be another hit for Sony. NightFraming - In order to compose pictures in a dimly lit restaurant or other settings with challenging light, NightFraming, another Sony exclusive feature, integrates NightShot technology, Hologram AF laser focusing system and TTL pre-flash metering. NightFraming is by far the more useful of the two modes in my opinion. Burst captures three full size images at 2fps and Multi-Burst captures sixteen 320x240 frames with a selectable capture rate of 7. The auto focus system now incorporates the 5-zone AF Area as was first seen on the Mavica CD400. We had only a few complaints with the F707, one of my biggest gripes was the non-ergonomic placement of the zoom control. ISO set to Auto 0. Drive Modes Single frame Burst 3 frames 2fps MultiBurst 16 - 320x240 saved as 1280x960 image 7. Image noise is combated by Sony's ClearColor Noise Reduction system in normal shooting and the Slow Shutter Noise Reduction system is employed when long exposure times are used. At the time of exposure, the flash fires twice: once to illuminate the subject and calculate correct exposure, then a second time to record the image with the best exposure possible. Pre-flash Metering - To get the best shots with the flash, the DSC-F717 incorporates Sony's advanced pre-flash metering system, which actually measures the light from the flash as it passes through the lens to calculate correct exposure. What you see is a green-tinted subject and the captured image is pretty much the same , except usually more grainy than the way it looks in the viewfinder. To get accurate exposure in uneven lighting, the multi-pattern metering option divides the scene into a matrix of separate cells. It streams the data to the memory card correction "stick" so additional movies can be shot almost instantly. Hologram AF - Ideal for photographing a smooth beach on a moonless night, the Hologram AF feature is a Sony-exclusive laser focusing system designed to achieve accurate focus on subjects with little contrast in dark conditions. It can be automatic or the user can manually select any one of the 5 focusing areas. The F707 was a very good camera but it tended to oversaturate some reds and greens, the F717 now captures much truer colors across the spectrum. The Zeiss 5x 38-190mm equiv. Lastly, when using the camera's zoom capabilities, the DSC-F717 has a new rotating zoom-control ring, for more intuitive precision handling, offering the photographer an alternative to the camera's standard toggle switch. To capture fast action sequences there's the Burst 3 mode that can capture up to 3 full size, 5-megapixel images in about two and a half seconds. Today several others have followed suit but I find it safe to say none will out-perform the F717. The time it takes to write to the media is not an issue as there no need to wait for it to finish before taking the next image as it streams the data to the card.
Multi-Pattern Metering - In addition to spot metering and center-weighted averaging, the DSC-F717 also offers multi-pattern metering.
You can use either the Sony HVL-F1000 flash or any 3rd party automatic flash. Additionally, the camera's multi-burst mode can snap up to 16 frames at 320 x 240 resolution that adds up to a single 1280 x 960 image - perfect for capturing every detail of subjects in motion, like a golf swing or high dive. It also has MPEG-HQX video recording capability with with full frame playback, up to the limit of the memory card. Frankly, I find very little use for this mode as the range of the IR illuminators is limited and the camera uses maximum ISO to enhance the sensitivity. A really nice change is that the manual focus ring on the lens barrel also functions as a zoom control when not using the manual focus mode. Still image and movie data will be quickly transferred to the host computer thanks to improved USB 2. White Balance Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Tungsten, One-Push manual Exposure Modes Program AE, Shutter speed priority, Aperture priority, full Manual, Scene and Movie. Movie mode has the updated MPEG and HGX resolution that yields a 320x240 movie at 16fps whose length is now determined by the storage media's capacity. It projects a safe, visible laser hologram pattern directly onto the subject so the camera can detect the contrast between the edge of the laser pattern and the subject itself. ISO set to Auto 0. Steve's Conclusion The Cyber-shot F717 is the year 2002 update of Sony's very popular , the first 5-megapixel consumer digicam on the market. The high-speed sequence is played back in animated form in the camera and is saved as a 1280x960 single image. You may look:

With a mention of the Memory Stick as I step onto my soapbox , it's now September 2002 and we still do NOT have any Memory Sticks larger than 128MB.
